Hear Uncle Jack Charles tell the story of 'The Cleverman'

By now you hopefully would have had the chance to watch Australia's newest superhero in action. Cleverman is two episodes deep on iview and has already garnered global attention for its original premise and gripping plot.

We recently found out from the creator himself, Ryan Griffen, that the process of seeking approval to tell the Dreaming stories meant that this labour of love was seven years in the making. He spoke of seeing the series as a celebration of Indigenous Australian culture and ultimately got permission from elders.

Each week, to coincide with each new episode, we'll be bringing you the stories behind the series as told by its incredibly talented cast. First up we have 'The Cleverman Story', written by Ryan Griffen and read by certified national treasure, actor, potter, musician and respected Aboriginal elder, the one and only Uncle Jack Charles.

Long ago there was a powerful Woman.

A Woman with great strength and knowledge. The children of the clan would look up to her as she would guide them through life.

One day the Woman was walking through the bush collecting food for the Jarjums when she came upon Snake.

Snake bit her, filling her with venom. She fell to the ground and became sick. As she lay there dying she noticed Crow sitting high in the tree watching as she passed away.

Time passed and her body turned to dust and that dust turned to dirt and that dirt one day became a city; with concrete stretching as far as the eye could see. But the Woman's energy, her spirit, remained.

One night a man, old and wise, arrives at the place that the spirit stood. He is the Cleverman. An important man in Australian Aboriginal culture. A man of power within the clan. The conduit between The Dreaming and this world.

He begins to sing and with each note the spirit of the woman begins to appear before him. But she takes the form of smoke, and she floats in front of the Old Man. The Old Man takes in a deep breath, inhaling the Woman, capturing her within himself.

The Old Man takes the spirit away, takes her to a place full of bodies, where he finds the lifeless form of an Aboriginal girl lying peacefully. Beautiful even in her dead state. Her dark skin covered with white frost.

The Old Man leans over the girl, clamps his mouth over hers. For a moment, it looks as if he might kiss her. Instead, he slowly exhales - forcing his breath into her body, and with it, the smoke of the ancient Woman within him.

He stands back.

He waits.

And then, it happens. The icy frost on the Aboriginal girl's skin slowly starts to melt.

There is movement under her eyelids.

Water pools around her now as her body begins to pulse with life.

Then, slowly, one eye blinks open. Then the other.

The Old Man smiles. His work is done.
